Sotheby’s and Spaghetti Tonight

Join us tonight for a fundraising dinner-sale-silent auction extravaganza, as if you needed a noble reason to come let the Roller Dames serve you noodles.

Here’s the scoop (ha haaa, serving joke!): Emily Evans, Roller Dames’ newby, Whittier Elementary art teacher, tattoo arteest and all-around awesome lady, was recently diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia. She’ll be hospitalized for a month or more while she receives and recovers from a bone marrow transplant. Tonight’s fundraiser will help defray her medical costs and personal expenses while she is being treated.

I can't wait to get this gal back on her skates!

Dinner will be tonight from 5-7 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5200 Glenn Ave, Sioux City. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students. The silent auction will feature the art of Steven Hall Sr., Amy Foltz, John Bowitz and Lynn Johnson, and the bake sale will feature baked goods by the Sioux City Roller Dames (in addition to the work of other, more qualified bakers). I hope to see everyone there!

Roller Dames vs. Derby Dames: The Shequel!

Saturday night, Long Lines Family Recreation Center, two teams entered, one team left…then the other team left, too;  I mean, we’ve all got families and carpools and stuff. But, on the track, we were totally ruthless. Well, within reason.

1-2-3 SMASH!

After coming back for a narrow victory in our October bout against D3 in Des Moines, the Roller Dames were pumped for another highly competitive bout. D3 jumped out to an early lead, with Stella Italiana scoring 7 unanswered points in the first jam and Cosmo Disco scoring 13 in the second. Then someone told PBR we were behind, so she put up 10 unanswered points while Stella Italiana was in the penalty box, bringing the score to and even 29-29.

Seriously, guys, this isn't the time to practice your NKOTB dance medley!

Roller Dames kept a narrow lead for the next few jams, then Dubbs, in against Stella, got lead jammer and was all set to widen the lead when she got sent to the penalty box (oh noooooo!). Stella scored 20 points in the jam, bringing the score to 50-34. Both teams defenses kept the scores low for the rest of the half, but D3 maintained a 20ish-point lead until the buzzer sounded.

Call McCarthy! It's a Red swarm!

Soooo, after the tournament, we had decided that we were no longer a second-half team. Really. But, honestly, would Rocky IV have been a good movie if Sly Stallone had knocked Drago out in the third round? Of course not!

Dubbs' super-secret strategy: distract the blocker with her sweet sprinkler move.

WeLiveInSodHouses played a short set during halftime and they were so good, I went out the next day and bought a tamborine and a tub of mustache wax!

A quirky bass player? Whoever heard of such a thing!?

Funsize started the second half in the box, luckily, Dames’ Great Wall of Heiney kept Stella scoreless. The Roller Dames crept back and were soon within 7 points of the lead, then this happened: D3 jammers were in the box for 5 out of 6 consecutive jams. On one occasion, Stella was sent to the box, saving Mo Payne from serving out a 2-minute stint. This was a game-changer, which allowed the Dames to rack up 3 grand slams and, over the course of these 6 jams, outscore D3 34-6. In the next to last jam, Mo Payne put up 3 grand slams of her own, driving the last nails into D3′s coffin.  The final score was 126-149, Roller Dames.

"Oh, wait. There's an ass there."

"Oh, no! It's over here too!"

Big thanks to the Derby Dames, their refs, crew and fans for coming out to play with us, and also for reminding us that if you can’t say something nice, you should probably just give them the finger. (-;

Busy, Busy Weekend…If You’re Awesome, That Is.

Tonight the best weekend ever begins! The Kornstalkers are hosting their second recruiting party tonight, 7-11 at The Icky Nickel. If you’ve been weeping into your wine glass during your nightly bubble bath because you didn’t make it out last weekend, here is your second chance. And if you did make it to last week’s party, well, you should probably come to this one too, because the dudes get less off-putting each time you see them. Sincerely.

Tomorrow is Roller Dames bout day! We’ll be playing a rematch against the Des Moines Derby Dames, who narrowly lost our last bout in Des Moines. They are a really fun team to watch and even more fun to play, so this bout is  a must-see. I’m sure you are all 100% on top of every aspect of life, just like me, and have had your tickets for weeks, but, in the unlikely case that you do not, you can harass your favorite Dame until she brings you tickets, swing by Knoepfler Chevrolet or the Roller Dames office to pick some up, or just comment here to get ya some. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 6 and the bout will start at 7. And don’t forget to pencil in the afterparty at Dalton’s, where the only thing more intoxicating than victory is booze!

Too Hot for Hu Hot!

Join the Roller Dames tonight, 5-8, at Hu Hot in Sioux City, where we’ll be slinging noodles! A whole mess of us dames will be around serving, selling tickets and providing entertainment (we do a widely acclaimed rendition of  “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad”). All of your tips will go to our travel fund, without which the Dames could not travel to such exotic locales as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and La Crosse, Wisconsin. So come eat some noodles and help out your favorite bunch of skatey ladies!
